School of Visual Arts presents “Transfiguration,” an exhibition of works by SVA students selected by a jury of their peers. Organized by SVA Galleries, “Transfiguration” is on view Saturday, May 13, through Thursday, June 15, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 141/133 West 21st Street, New York City.
Participating artists include Chaerin Ahn, Fana Feng, Ella Hilsenrath, Vieno James, Justin Johnson, Cela Luz, Anna Stallone and Chang Shen Tan.
Through processes of layering image and medium, these artists remove the veil of optimism, revealing darkness, destruction and loss. The painting, collage, photography and sculpture in this exhibition explore the relationship between memory and experience, and find productive inspiration in diversity.
Chaerin Ahn’s (BFA Visual & Critical Studies) ink drawings portray abstracted human bodies as a site of individual and collective trauma.
Fana Feng (MFA Photography, Video and Related Media) presents surrealist-inspired mixed-media collages.
Ella Hilsenrath’s (BFA Fine Arts) life-size figurative sculptures convey a longing for physical and emotional nurture experienced during childhood.
Vieno James’s (BFA Fine Arts) large-scale multimedia collages are expressions of personal response to racism, classicism, and war.
Justin Johnson (MFA Photography, Video and Related Media) presents photo collages that explore societal demise through images of past and present crises.
Cela Luz (MFA Fine arts) explores the relationship between memory and consciousness in abstract oil paintings.
Anna Stallone (BFA Fine Arts) records her own memories and experiences via experimental photographic processes.
Chang Shen Tan’s (MFA Fine Arts) multimedia paintings find influence in modernism, minimalism and Japanese aesthetics.
Juried exhibitions are a way for SVA’s student body to recognize the achievements of their most distinguished classmates. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants to the annual SVA Galleries call for entries, whose submissions undergo a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements.
