Critical text August 2017 for 'Fragments of a pictorial discourse' show
The multicolor and expansive painting of the Rio born artist Cela Luz is guided by markedly intuitive
processes and connects two universes that are fundamental in her trajectory. New York and
Rio de Janeiro appear in the artist’s constructions, through an evidence of up-to-dateness and
experience (the North American city where she studied and lives) and of affective memory (her
hometown in Brazil). Using a variety of materials – oil, pastel (dry and oily) and charcoal, among
others – Cela creates in general large-scale works, of attractive chromatism and great lyricism,
like Stars in my coffee. Her canvases exude freedom, executed under an expansive tone and with
an interesting game between the figurative and the abstract.

intuitivos e conecta dois universos fundamentais na sua trajetória. Nova York e Rio de Janeiro
aparecem nas construções da artista, por meio de um dado de atualidade e vivência (a cidade
norte-americana, onde estudou e vive) e de memória afetiva (a cidade natal no Brasil). Utilizando
materiais diversos – o óleo, o pastel (seco e oleoso) e o carvão, entre outros - , Cela cria em geral
trabalhos de grande escala, de cromatismo sedutor e grande lirismo, como Stars in my coffee.
Suas telas exalam liberdade, realizadas sob um tom expansivo e com um interessante jogo entre
o figurativo e o abstrato.
